Permanently modify paragraph style

I wish to permenantly modify the "normal" paragraph style, in this case to
include paragraph numbering but no indentation. While I have no problem
saving the style with the numbering, the indentation keeps reverting to a
hanging when a new document is started. I have tried to create a new style,
and same problem, new documents based on the new style still give me the
cursed hanging indent.
Any help much appreciated
 
Knowing your version of Word is important _both_ for paragraph
numbering _and_ for how the Normal style works.

I would strongly discourage this. Because almost every other style in Word
is based on Normal, you may get numbering on all of them (including the text
on labels). Try numbering Body Text instead, and use that as your default
body style.
