Vista - is it here to stay?

Maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people, but I haven't seen anyone that
has been pleased with Vista and even MAC has started a PR campaign as to how
poor Vista is.

I've used it myself and have to say, I prefer the more comfortable, familiar
XP.

I wonder if Microsoft is listening and if there will ever be a chance Vista
would go the way of Windows ME? There seems to be to much eye candy in
Vista at the expense of functionality/familiarity.

My Vista system runs perfectly, and very fast. Perhaps your desire for XP
is just because you don't like to move on, and that's OK. But if you want a
system that will lead the pack, Vista is here to stay. Learn to use it and
you'll see.

So you haven't seen anyone who is pleased with Vista. Microsoft has sold
millions of copies and in this forum there is a small percentage of those
people who come and bitch about Vista. Yes, Vista isn't the greatest, but
Vista will probably get better over time. With a couple of Service Packs
and upgraded software, Vista just might be OK.

Get that high powered machine to run it on.

I use Vista and all my applications run fine with Vista - Visual Studio 2005
& Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, Sony Vegas 8, Photoshop CS3, and a
few other applications work well with Vista. I am happy with it so far.

Hi,
I wonder if Microsoft is listening and if there will ever be a chance
Vista would go the way of Windows ME? There seems to be to much eye candy

Don't count on it. Vista is not WinME despite the naysayers (and ME was fine
on hardware designed for it, but Microsoft was already dropping the 9x line
at that point and support for ME was severely lacking). This would be a bad
place to seek good or unbiased opinons on a product, as everyone who comes
here is having problems. There are millions who are not. Vista will not be
going away, it is the direction Windows is headed. Functionality is actually
much improved, the problems are that software vendors and hardware makers
are still dragging behind, most preferring to force users to buy new rather
than spend time upgrading existing programs and supporting driver software.
The changes in the UI are the results of extensive usability studies that
pointed towards the design changes. It takes time for users to become
comfortable with this, and it's nothing compared to the move from CLI
(command line based) to GUI (graphical icon based) some 13-14 years ago.
I've used it myself and have to say, I prefer the more comfortable,
familiar XP.

And 6 years ago it was referred to as the cartoonish progeny of the marraige
of Windows' 98 & 2000. Shouts of "never" were heard everywhere.
Maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people, but I haven't seen anyone that

You don't really expect Apple to say anything nice about Microsoft now do
you?

Yes it is here to stay. It is a little bloated has a few wrinkles to be
ironed out. But it has a good future. Don't believe what some people at
Microsoft are saying. Don't give up yet and don't go out and buy a Mac like
some ex Microsoft employees have so stupidly done.

Well, Windows XP is on its way out (June 2008) and the Company is not in the
interest of discussing the next desktop client release just yet. Much of the
effort is focused on getting people to realize the value in Windows Vista
today and in the future. So yes, Vista is here to stay and I find it insane
to compare to Windows ME which is a completely different code base, Windows
Vista's built in rich functionality, security, organization, management,
collaboration and search easily surpasses Windows 9x releases of Windows.

The fact that Microsoft has really focused on core areas of Windows in Vista
that end users complained about in XP such as performance and security make
it worthy enough upgrade already.

and even MAC has started a PR campaign as to how poor Vista is.

Of course they have!! Apple are the little guy - of course they're going to
take pot shots. Microsoft is such an easy target. On the other hand, they
are extremely successful. Look at their market share.....

I've been running Vista continuously for almost a year. There were a number
of minor bugs, most of which have since been ironed out. In due course
there'll be a service pack and no doubt continuous improvement for the
forseeable future.

I've had great service from Vista - not a single crash or significant
problem whatsoever.

It has one major disadvantage - development was abandoned after three years,
and the whole thing was done over after Bill Gates saw the light (at last)
about the importance of security. So Vista was developed over a relatively
short time (only a couple of years) and it shows. As a result it really
isn't that much different or better than XP for the average user. The user
interface is somewhat improved, but really it is only what XP should have
been in the first place. All the other changes are under the hood - very
substantial, but not very obvious to the user.
There seems to be to much eye candy in Vista at the expense of
functionality/familiarity.

The eye candy in XP is dreadful - do you really like the hideous Fisher
Price colour scheme? The stupid fanfare and giggling children sound
effects? The patronising "My" in front of everything?

In comparison Vista is subtle and sophisticated.
I've used it myself and have to say, I prefer the more comfortable,
familiar XP.

Well, if that's the case you should stick with XP, obviously. Others, such
as myself, prefer to move on.

No, it won't last long. The plan is to introduce a new version of client
Windows [referred to as Windows 7] in 2010 (although they probably will
delay it to 2011), so Vista gets a service pack or two and then it's gone.

Personally I hate Vista. I decided to use it because I got a copy of
Ultimate 64 bit with a motherboard and processor package for a really good
deal. Since I have installed it I have had nothing but compatability issues
with software and it's quite a bit more of a pain to get it to network....I
miss my XP Pro. My latest headache is the fact that I updated my BIOS and now
I have to call someone in India who can't speak English to save their life to
re-activate my Windows! Some people have run into this problem simply by
updating a sound card driver....again a problem I've never had with my XP Pro.

I do however think that Vista is here to stay whether or not we like it. I
just hope that the release of SP1 for Vista fixes some of these issues. The
menus may not be the way we like them and things that we used to be able to
access quickly are now hidden away 4 screens deep (i.e. the network status
window that shows packets sent/received, etc...) For someone like me who
builds their own computers and likes to keep things up to date (drivers,
BIOS, etc.) and make upgrades, I sincerely hope that Microsoft fixes this
re-activiation issue; it certainly is a headache that taking advil will fix...

I'd have to say that Vista has been running pretty good for us lately.

The only problem we are battling with now is how to get our Lotus SmartSuite
to install and run. We really need that program too. Other than that, things
have been pretty good.

I'm with you. I still use other PCs with XP and it's SO much better. What I
thought was absolutely terrible was the new Vista version of Word. I
de-installed it and installed a nice familiar copy of Word & Excel '97. What
a relief. I couldn't have my new PC open Word '97 even after associating (or
whatever Vista calls it now) the .doc extension with the '97 version, it kept
bringing up the new version which looked like it was from another planet.
I've heard of Vista users installling XP instead. I just don't get it, why
change things we got so accustomed to way back in Windows '95. Not only that,
it seems there's commands that are lacking in Vista. I have a couple of other
posts regarding that in this forum.

I've used Vista Home Premium since last March on my desktop, and apart from
two gripes, which I think are backward progressions from XP Home, I am
happy. My two gripes are the removal of the basic Microsoft Fax addin and
the limited dictionaries available in Windows Mail.

Any problems I have encountered have been responded to courteously by the
peers in this and other MS newsgroups. These groups are a wonderful, free,
resource that I have used for many years.

There are, unfortunately, a number of people who slag anything MS, you will
soon learn to ignore them.

My advice - persevere - read these groups and ask any questions you have.

BTW, I recently bought a laptop - and chose Vista over XP which I could have
had.

MAC? Oh you mean Apple, they're always doing this, they have to keep the
cult alive. Microsoft aren't that childish.

Which isn't really saying anything, of course what you're used to is more
familiar and comfortable.

Using Windows Vista for about 2 years now on my main machine, with it being
on all the others for other a year now.

No major issues in about 18 months, certainly nothing above ordinary for an
operating system.
There seems to be to much eye candy in Vista at the expense of
functionality/familiarity.

Too much eye candy? What eye candy, seriously? The UI is subtle and
professional, certainly far better than Windows XP.

That's fine. We don't all have to prefer the same things, and it's
certainly true that it's easier to be happy with something you're
familiar with than something that's new and different. Anything new
takes time to learn and become accustomed to.

That's what makes horse races.

I wonder if Microsoft is listening and if there will ever be a chance Vista

I don't agree at all, but again, your opinion doesn't have to be the
same as mine.

The historic progression of OS's shows very little time between each
version until XP. My first was Win 3.0. Very hot, state of the art
running with a 16 mhz processor and 8 megs of ram. (Upgrading ram at $50
USD/meg was out of the question) 2 years later is was Win95, then 98,
98SE, 2000, ME. 6 OS's in 7 years! XP was truly an oddity when it lasted
as long as it did, but none the less, I had poor luck with XP which is
the very reason I moved to Vista. 8 months now, and it is the most
stable OS I have ever used.

I just put XP back on a box I'm giving away. It did have Vista on it.
When I put XP back on it didn't run any better then it was with Vista.
My new HP has Vista and it run great, everything is very speedy on it.
In another year no one will be talking about Vista Vs XP anymore. I
have also seen some very unfavorable reviews of the new MAC OS, going
so far as to compare it to Vista.

kinda kooky comments, IMO. Buying a MAc is not "stupid". I dont own a
Mac, but I wouldn't consider it "stupid" to own one, either. If MS
keeps bringing out lame OS's, I might make the switch myself some day.
and to say that Vista is a "little bloated", is like saying there is a

Well, for OEMs it certainly is, but I am sure there will be retail boxes for
a good long while on the market. I am not gonna lie, Windows XP is the new
Windows 95 it won't be pushed off the market so easy. I even have an
unpulled Windows XP Pro retail box right now, but its gathering dust,
probably will donate it to a school next Monday. :)
