Vista Explorer Remembering Folder View Settings

E

Extracampine

From reading around and from my own experience, there seems to be a lot of
problems with Vista Explorer remembering folder view settings (details,
icons, etc).

Whats the current state of play with this problem? Is there a solution to
it, or a bug fix? Its very annoying to have to change the settings every now
and again when I enter a folder.

With XP it was a 400 limit and you could use regedits or one from Kelly's XP
that does them for you to increase this to 8000. I don't think these
regedits work in Vista. You could try.

Increase Folder View Size to 8000
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/bags8000.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

Thanks Chad.

I used to use those regedits with XP. The BagMRU is already large enough
with Vista - I don't think that that is the problem.

It has been this way since Beta2. I don't know why, don't when/if
it will be fixed. Yes, it is annoying.

But its such a basic and fundamental issue to file browsing. How is it
possible that this problem exists? I trust they are working on a solution to
it.

I haven't seen this on my machine yet, I think view handling has been
improved somewhat.

One thing to remember about saved views is that they're unique for each
namespace path:

"Desktop\<UserName>\Documents"

can have one view saved and

"Desktop\Computer\C:\Users\<Username>\Documents"

can have a different saved view. So all subfolders of <UserName> can have
two different saved views.

I'm curious about one thing: do you have explorer set to "Launch folder
windows in a seperate process"? I don't -- and I'm wondering if multiple
instances of explorer may sometimes be at odds with each other.

P.S. I saw this question in the file_management group as well --
crossposting is preferred to multiposting -- that way a response from one
group shows in all.

Thanks Keith,

I will crosspost in future. Good advice about namespace paths - I did take
this into accout, and tend to access my music folders from the same route
each time.

I do not have explorer set to "Launch folder windows in a seperate
process" - in fact I'm not even sure what this means !

I also just loaded Vista on my PC (Utlimate Version). I am having the
same issue. I usually deselect "Remember each folder's view settings"
so that I can just sort by List on the main directory and it will List
for all subdirectories. Always worked fine in XP. But with Vista if I
set the main directory to List all the subdirectories are different (I
think with Details). But it seems to save it for the directories that
I change it to in the future when I go back. It seems like it is doing
the "Remember each folder's view settings" even though it is
unchecked. If anyone figures it out that would be great.

Also is there anyway to change the columns and have them permantely
stay that way for all sub directories, etc.

Thanks.

I have the same issue (Home Premium). Tried to search the Internet for an
answer, but the only thing I can find is your post here and in another forum.
I even tried to modify the registry so the maximum number of folder setting
Vista can remember is ZERO, no luck.

This is definitly a bug, hope we don't have to wait for SP1 for a fix.
