Folder types and preview images not remembered by Vista

Vista appears to be forgetting or misplacing information regarding my
folders. Specifically, when I go into Folder Options, Customize, and choose
an image to display as the folder preview icon, that image seems to change
randomly after I add new files to the folder, delete files from the folder,
or change the folder from visible to hidden (or vice versa). Often, it brings
in another image that I am using for the preview of another folder, and makes
that the preview for the folder I just changed, despite the face that the
folder does not contain the image Windows suddenly decided to use.

Also, Vista often does not remember that I have set specific folders to the
type "Music Details" or "Pictures and Videos". It often interchanges the two,
changing a Music folder to a Pictures folder without my consent, or vice
versa. But this happens inconsistently, and does not affect all folders at
once.

In my Folder View Options, I have "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
unchecked and "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. I have also
disabled Automatic Folder Type Discovery according to this article:
http://www.windows-now.com/blogs/km...-disable-automatic-folder-type-discovery.aspx

I have even gone so far as to edit the registry and increase the BagRMU Size
according to this article:
http://www.astahost.com/info.php/increase-windows-xp-explorer-folder-cache_t9415.html

I have rebooted since making all these changes, but folder settings are
still being "forgotten" over time. Vista has no reason to be changing folder
settings behind my back. Why does it persist in doing this and how can I stop
it permanently?

I tried that link - did all of the registry edits and other changes it asked
for. Rebooted my computer. Went through several of my Music folders and set
preview icons for them. Closed the folder window. Reopened it and I can
already see that it's played switcheroo with the vast majority of them. So
I've been defeated by Vista yet again.

Any other bright ideas?
