vista does not enter sleep/standby anymore

Hi, my desktop system has recently stopped entering standby when selecting
it under the start menu. If I hit the sleep function, it appears as if it's
trying to sleep (turns video output off), but it immediately resumes.
Nothing else, including fans, mouse, and HDD turn off. Sleep has worked
perfectly for nearly a year since installation. I haven't changed anything
in my BIOS (and have doublechecked settings and haven't changed any windows
settings or power profiles. Under the mouse option of device manager, I've
tried changing the "allow device to wake system" option and tried changing
usb ports.
I haven't changed any hardware (and not other external devices connected),
and i haven't installed any software that should affect it (recently
installed daemon tools, updated printer driver, samsung cell phone software
before noticing it). I also can't find any new processes which might be
preventing it. And of course, I've tried rebooting. Any ideas? thanks
