Virtual news server?

T

Tom Corcoran

Can someone please recommend a virtual news server for Windows. I've been
told about Hampster, I can't find it online but I get the impression it's
for unix.

I want to use it to combine all my servers into one fed so I can see all my
watched threads in one pane.

Thanks a lot,

Tom.

You had a slight spelling error which impaired your search.

Hamster
(Freeware) (open source)
OS:
Languages: English
Description: Hamster is a local server for news and mail. It's a
windows-32-bit-program. It allows the use of multiple news- and
mailserver and combines them to one mail- and newsserver for the
news/mail-client. It load faster than a normal newsreader because many
threads can run simultaneous. It contains scorefile for news and mail,
a build-in script language, the GUI allows translation to other
languages, it can be used in a network and that's not all ...

When you're looking for freeware programmes, if they're good (like
Hamster) you can almost always find them at

What you're looking for is a news aggregator. I think XNews was a popular
one. One of the problems with hamster is that you can't recover your
passwords once they're plugged in...you can only change them or delete the
entry.

Hey I was reading that earlier, nice :) Found it wasn't current with v2 but
I got some tips. The autostarting, etc is all done through a ini file now.
Still trying to get it going with Outlook Express / thunderbird, it says the
server could not be found...set everything up as per help but obviously
missed something...

Cheers, Tom.

It was in a different group.

Ah... now I understand. Hanging out with Blinky, Q, and DC.
Good times.
I see Boomer's still telling people they're in the wrong
place without offering anything helpful.

Interesting signature, sinner...

I always liked this program better than Hamster, particularly
because it downloads headers only when you request them:

NewsPlex is a news-server multiplexer. It allows any news-reader to
access several news-servers simultaneously, by merging their content
transparently into one single news-server. NewsPlex merges the lists
of news-groups proposed by different news-servers into one single
list, and for each news-group, it merges the lists of articles
available on different news-servers into one single list of articles.
NewsPlex does not retrieve articles before the news-reader requests
them. It only creates local indices and redirects article retrieval as
necessary.

This is pasted from its main page. There is a typo in the release
date oh version 2004. It is 2004.01.15, not 2003.01.15. Mr. Mirowski
was a little distracted when writting the page :) Take a look at it at

He must have problems with the dates.
In this page he speaks about 23rd December 04 and 5th December 04 http://triceron.com/news.htm

Hey, I'm a minority, too! (see sig) Do you think I can play this to my
advantage while job hunting[1]? }:O)

I cant see why not ;)

I think I had better drop a few strategic terms, like GIMP user, for

Just don't go taking out loud about "Unix" -- they can get real mean
when they get riled...

Well, there's always going to be someone offended by
something.
I figure anyone who uses the nym 'SINNER' and also quotes
Mark Twain has got to have a good sense of humor.
Then again, Twain was almost cruel at times with his
observations. Maybe you're just a sadist.
