Virtual Memory ?

I have an small .exe file which is a Xmas tree that kids can "decorate"
It is a 1.8Mb file - "Macromedia 5.01t26" (5 Dec 03)
My PC is a Pentium 4 - 3 GHz with 1 Gb RAM.
Dual boot with WinME and WinXP SP2 with all latest updates.
The file plays OK in WinME, however attempts to play using WinXP gets me "
Direct Player 5.0 - "This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual
memory to run".

Only choice is "OK" then the file does not open.
Where do I start ? (Would like to send the file to the kids) :)
TIA for any help.

Some further research led to discovering that the problem was not rare, with
older "Macromedia Director" files that were written using Director 5 or 6.
(letting WinXP manage Virtual Memory only seems to let them work with 512Mb
RAM or less)
To let them run, Virtual Memory has to be custom set, and the rough rule
seems to be :
Set Min Page File size to 500Mb
Set Max Page File size to 500Mb (or to a figure that added to PC RAM does
not exceed 2048Mb)
In my case I set Min to 500Mb and Max to 1024Mb (PC has 1Gb of RAM)
(so far other programs do not seem to be affected)
Another suggestion was to set Page File to :
Min 4000Mb - Max 4000Mb
(Was a bit too radical for me) :)

Hi

Thanks for the update. On this particular PC - with 1GB RAM - I let the
system manage it, which seems to work without the use of much of the
pagefile. If I'm editing videos on one of the other PCs, then I will up
the maximum to a more appropriate value.
