Virtual Memory too low

I have a 40 gig one year old gateway with 512 ram - 14 gig
free space. Windows XP Home edition, version 2002. Am
working on a huge word document in 3 pieces with 2000
pictures. Works fine as long as the document doesn't
exceed 546 mb size. When I try to combine into one
document, Word leaves a message "Postponing Auto Recovery
Save." And it will not allow me to save the larger than
546 mb document.

I have downloaded all available Windows XP and Word
updates available.

I went into Control Panel and looked at Virtual Memory.
Shows System Managed as 766. When I change to custom with
2000/4000 max. it still will not allow the two documents
to be combined into a larger doc than 546 mb.

The document in its multiple pieces is less than 700 mb
and will copy to a CD.

Any help will be appreciated - I'm on a real time
sensative deadline to get this finished for publishing
before Christmas.

Are you inserting BMP images or JPG? JPG files are signicaficantly smaller
than a raw BMP file...

Did you
a: click Set after adjusting the settings? (and it is the Max that
matters more, I would only set the Initial size very high if I were
working on such things every day)

b: If putting it on some second drive, leave a notional amount (say
initial 2 max 50) on C:? Without that the system is liable to ignore
the page file altogether
