Please advise if I should change the amount of Virtual Memory to 384 MB as I
have increased the RAM to 256 MB. I'm not getting a 'Your System is running
low on Virtual Memory' message but just wondered if Virtual Memory should be
changed as I've increased the RAM to 256 from 128 MB; in other words, would
such a change increase performance?

Right now the Virtual Memory window shows Initial Size of 192 MB and Maximum
Size of 384 MB. It also shows Minimum Allowed: 2 MB, Recommended: 382 MB
and Currently Allocated: 192 MB.

Please walk me through any changes you recommend as I've never done this
before and am skeptical about doing on my own.

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop computer with Pentium 111 processor at 930
MHZ, 20 GB Hard Drive with 10.1 GB free and 256 MB of RAM. The File System
is FAT 32. I recently upgraded from Windows ME with 128 MB of RAM.

Many thanks.

I would make it at least twice the size of your actual ram memory, 256MB Ram
= 512MB Virtual or more.

Let Windows manage it. Click on System managed size to have Windows choose
the best size of the paging file.

Many thanks for your response.

I overlooked the fact that Windows XP will manage it, and apologize for this
oversight and writing to you.

There is nothing wrong with setting a fixed size pagefile as long as it is
large enough and you will get varying opinions as to the correct size.
The PC I'm using to send this post is a Dell Dimensions 4100, the same P3
processor speed as yours, 512MB Ram and 3 Hard Drives (80GB, 80GB and
160GB). The pagefile (1 GB) is located on the first partition of the third
drive.

If you have any spare money the next thing I would do is to buy a larger
hard drive.

Hi Stewart,

Nothing to apologize for. I overlook lots of things.

Keep having fun. ;-)
