VIRTUAL MEMORY TOO LOW

B

I seem to be getting this warning box upon logging on that says "Virtual
Memory Too Low". What exactly does this mean?
Then periodically an error box will display on an open page saying "runtime
visual will shut down for an unknown reason", what is that? I can be in the
middle of a program and no matter what, my computer will just close the
pages. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

go to microsoft.com
and search for "low
virtual memory"

and follow the instructions
to open the virtual memory
control panel and adjusting
the vm.

also, I would suggest
for you to use the "custom"
option and enter the numbers
provided by your computer.

you will see the "recommendations"
on the bottom half of the virtual
memory control panel.

How much RAM do you have? 256MB or less is too low [RAM is cheap now].
Anything larger could mean a memory leak in an application somewhere. Set
your virtual memory to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have. Both minimum and
maximum should be the same. This would slighly increase speed and decrease
disk defragmentation.

Search for how to set the virtual memory. Quite easy. Usually needs a reboot.

I strongly disagree. Set it to let Windows manage it. Make sure you
have several gigs available on whichever disks the swap file resides
on (usually C).

Not enough RAM. 256K was a screaming plenty at one time (if that is
what you have). I can get 2GB for $35USD.

Let Windows deal with it after you add more.

You can certainly read all about the messages you see, but they will
just tell you the solution is to add more RAM or not run so many
memory intensive applications at the same time.

I have yet to see anyone complain about having too much RAM. Always
too little...

Where is that guy that has in his signature about going to the moon
and back on 2K (or was it 4K). I checked it out and this is true.

it is highly likely that
it is already set to the
defaulted state of
auto,

especially since the o.p
hasn't a clue of how to
modify the vm.

OK. Then explain why he's running low on virtual memory. I guess Windows
isn't handling it too well then....

Until he says how much RAM he has, why pursue it?

Not enough RAM for the apps he's running, combined with not enough
free disk space for the swap file.

The explanation is quite simple. That message is a function of two
things:

1. Not enough physical memory

2. As a result of #1, when it is time to access the pagefile, the
settings are incorrect. If OP lets Windows manage virtual memory, the
message would no longer appear.

Still, that doesn't address the actual problem (not enough RAM for all
the processes running).
