Sounds like you have very low physical memory to me. How much do you have
installed? You can change how much virtual memory Windows is using by...

Control Panel
System
Advanced (tab)
Performance Settings (button)
Advanced (tab)
Change (button)

And change this to a higher min and max. Or set them the same as the max.
Also programs like FireFox (FF) has lots of memory leaks (it always did).
And if you use FF, it will just continue to eat more and more memory until
you close it and reopen. Although it may not recover them all and you might
have to reboot to get it all back.

Bill thanks I did follow your instructions but was not sure if or how I
change things..Below is what appears...

C:- 384 -768

Space available 47095 MB

o custom size Initial size MB 384
Max size MB 768

o system managed size
o no.paging file

Total paging file for all drives
min 2MB
recommended 381 MB
Currently allocated 548 MB

What do I do? There is a checked mark in the custom size o above

Thanks again, Gerard

I would set both max and min around 1500MB (this should stop Windows from
automatically increasing the size and slowing you down). You have plenty of
hard drive space so that is okay. Still sounds like you have very little
physical memory though. When you first pull up System from the Control
Panel, it tells you how much you have installed near the bottom. I'm
guessing you have 256MB or 386MB which isn't enough for the OS itself
really. Increasing to 512MB or 1024MB (1GB) is even better. Most of us don't
gain much of having more than 1GB installed though.

Bill Thanks again.
I did what you suggested putting in 1500 in each min and max. We will see
if that helps. You are right..under system at bottom it says 256 RAM.
Is that part of the problem and how can I increase to 512 MB or 1GB?

Second smaller issue if you will.........last few days Any thing I open is
opening to the 'restore down' size on my screen not the full max. How can I
get it to open as it used to?
-- Many thanks,
Gerard

Hi Gerard! Yes 256MB of RAM isn't so good. 512MB would be so much better.
And 1GB (1000MB) would be not quite twice as good, but still worth it in
most cases. Although the limiting factor depends on your make or model. Your
manual, manufactures website, or many memory manufactures website can list
this information for you. And tell you what kind and how much you can add.

Sorry, I don't understand your second question. :(

What is your computer make and model?

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Is the computer left on 24/7?

Closing a program where there is a memory leak does not release memory.
Release only occurs when the computer is restarted.

The need for RAM depends entirely on how the computer is used. What is
the computer used for?

The ability to add RAM is determined by the computer specification. This
is why I asked your computer make and model.

Hope this helps.
