Windows ignoring virtual memory settings

I currently have virtual memory setup on drive c with initial size 512MB and
maximum size 1024MB. With 1GB ram, I have yet to see total page file usage
increase beyond 1100MB under heavy load, with about 850MB typical usage, so I
chose these settings. I disable virtual memory, restart and set "custom
size." Settings are held until the computer is restarted or put into sleep or
hibernate mode.

Windows seems to ignore these settings and increases the paging file size to
1535MB for a total of 2462MB, as reported by task manager. Once, Windows
reduced the page file to 0 size whereupon I recieved a warning about low
virtual memory; I do not know why this happened.

Windows XP handles these in an excellent manner. The legacy of Windows 98,
ME and the others remain and much concern is expended on something that
really doesn't matter. Set the sizes back to what you originally observed,
and relax.

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. To get this information whilst in Windows Explorer
place the cursor on each drive in turn, right click and select Properties.

Hope this helps.

Maybe I need to restate....

I have a 56GB singly partitioned hard drive with 16.3GB free space available.
I want to set up the pagefile at 1024MB.

The configuration screen says this:

Drive: C Paging file size: 1024-1024

x Custom size
Initial size 1024
Maximum size 1024

Minimum allowed 2
Recommended 1534 MB
Currently allocated 1535MB

If i disable the pagefile, restart, then set it up as i want it, making no
other changes, it is resized by windows XP to 1535MB after the computer is
restarted or put into sleep or hibernate mode. I do not want this to happen.
Is there a way to 'convince' windows not to alter the size of the pagefile,
once it is created at 1024MB?

Yes, I click on set and windows reports the current size as 1024MB. So does
task manager. UNTIL i restart and it is resized by windows to 1535MB.

This behavior will happen on systems with certain versions of Norton
products installed, specifically Norton Antivirus 2004 and Norton
Corporate Antivirus 9.0

If you have either of these products installed go to www.symantec.com
and use the Search panel (top right) to locate the relevant Symantec
Knowledge Base article:
NAV2004: 2005123011260806
Corporate 9.0: 2004042913251448
(just copy and past the article number into the search box).
