Viewing Thumbnails

Hello,
The other day I suddenly noticed that I am no longer seeing thumbnails
correctly in my folders. I have the thumbnail view selected, but instead of
the picture in miniature, I see an icon. However, the folder icons still show
the mini pictures on them. Hope you know what I mean by that. But, when I
open the folder to view the actual j-pegs, I do not see the thumbnails, and
yes, I have double-checked to make sure I am in the thumbnail view. I have
rebooted several times. I've changed the viewing program, but to no avail.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi Elizabeth,

Try this and see if it helps.......

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Click on OK in the Regsvr32 dialogue box.

See if you can now view the Thumbnails instead of just the icons.

Patti,
Thanks so much! Another person suggested I do a system restore, which I did.
I had to go back two weeks to get the thumbnails to show! So I guess I hadn't
looked at any pictures for awhile! LOL I'm wondering, is the system restore
too drastic or would your method have been better? I'm going to keep this
info for future use in case this happens again. I am also wondering what I
could have done to change things or screw things up. I'm usually pretty
careful, because I know that I know just enough to really screw things up! :)
Thanks so much for your reply! I appreciate the help!

My method would have been less drastic than System Restore, but my method
was based on an assumption that the shimgvw.dll file (Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer) had been unregistered. Had the unregistration of the file not
been the cause of the problem, then my method may not have "cured" the
problem.

What you could have done to change things, and this is why I thought that
re-registering the dll file would be the solution, was to unregister that
file as a temporary workaround for the WMF exploit that was discovered in
late December of last year and for which there was no security patch
available at that time.
