Windows Explorer

I have around 500 pictures in a folder. I don't know when this problem
started but when I view that folder in Windows Explorer using either a
filmstrip or thumbnail view the thumbnail pictures do not match the actual
jpg file. This happens on approximately half the pictures in this folder
and this is the only folder that I am aware of that this problem exists in.
If I double click the image the actual picture opens up (I use Grandview)
and matches both the name of the file and the EXIF data of that file but yet
the thumbnail was of a completely different picture. Some of the jpg files
have the same thumbnail associated with them.
In filmstrip view, the highlighted jpg file will be correctly displayed on
the screen even though the thumbnail down below is of a totally different
picture. The thumbnail pictures are pictures only from this particular
folder.
While this is strange problem, at least to me, I was able to fix it by
creating a folder and copying all the jpg's from the old problem folder into
a new folder. Now the thumbnails match the photo shown when using filmstrip
view and in thumbnail view the picture that open matches the thumbnail.
The other strange thing is that if I Irfanview to look at a thumbnail view
of this folder all the thumbnails match the files.
While this isn't a disastrous problem because just copying it fixes it I
sure would like to know why or what could be causing this.

Thats pretty odd. Have you run chkdsk/f on your drives?

Open a Window's Command Prompt (type "cmd.exe" into the "Run" box) and
navigate to your "My Pictures" folder.

Then type the following command to delete the hidden file : [Thumbs.db]

del /f /a /s Thumbs.db

This command will delete all [hidden] files named "Thumbs.db" in all
sub-folder to that you are in when issuing the command. So you should use
it in your "My Pictures" folder.

By deleting all of the Thumbnails Database files, the caching of thumbnails
should be refreshed.

=======

You can also turn off Thumbnail Caching for all folders permanently by
going to :

"Control Panel" > "Folder Options" > "View" (tab)

....and on the "View" tab, scroll down to the option :

"Do not cache Thumbnails" and place a checkmark in the box next to it.

Finally click on the [ok] button to save your settings and exit "Folder
Options"

Close all instances of Windows Explorer and re-open to realize the new
setting.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations, it was the thumbs.db file, I
removed it and now the folder is just fine. I feel like an idiot, let's see
the thumbnails don't match the files, you think it might be a thumbs.db
problem, duh. For some reason I just didn't think of it and of course now
it make perfect sense as to why copying all the files into a new folder
fixed the problem. Just never ran into anything like that before.
Thanks again.

If the problem persists after deleting the "Thumbs.db" file, or returns,
as I wrote in my earlier post; you *can* turn off Thumbnail Caching
altogether (this does not mean that you cannot see your pictures in
"Thumbnail" view - it just means they'll be just a little slower to
appear - but they will still be available).

You can turn off Thumbnail caching by navigating to :

"Control Panel" > "Folder Options" > "View" (tab)

....and under the "View" tab, look for the option :

"Do not cache Thumbnails" ... and put an "tick" in the associated box,
then click on [ok] to save changes and exit "Folder Options".
