Very slow shutdown

R

Richard Goh

I have a laptop computer with XP/SP2 that takes over 4 minutes to complete
the shutdown.
The logging of and the saving settings portion takes less than 30 seconds.
Then the "Windows is shutting down" screen stays for 3 minutes and 40
seconds with a lot of hard drive activity. Then a clean shut down.

I suspect a background file is the cause, but how had I determine what
process could be doing this.
This is a backup computer and does not have a lot of software installed.
I know that the following background programs are operating:
AVG Pro
MS Antispyware
MS wireless card (access point is filtered for this MAC address)
MS firewall

I don't have any screen savers, or other known utilities running.
It checks to be free of virus and spyware. Both built-in checks and web
service checks.
With the wireless access card removed, the shutdown time is the same.

Any tips to reduce this time would be appreciated.

See if this is set and undo it if it is:

Dont run the 3rd party trash, seems odd a mvp would promote such nonsence...
Try R.clicking my computer,properties,advanced,start-up,settings,in the
scroll
box,the last 2 words should end in-fast detect If more is there, edit, and
delete
the added,close out.

I aso have slow shutdown, so I did what you suggested. Ended in fast detect.
Now what? I suspect MVP provides solutions to MS problems as an extension of
MS Support. There is so much going on.

And further more (From another post):
There are a lot of links on this NG to independent gurus and problem
solvers. How do I know they can be trusted?

You can't. You can only start to trust if you stay here long enough to
learn about the people posting solutions.

My two other computers have "/NoExecute=OptIn after "fast detect" and they
close normally. What is this change supposed to do?
