real slow shutdown -- usual dosen't work

Hi All,

I have a perplexing shutdown problem on a customer's
XP-Pro-SP2 machine. I have already tried the usual fixes
at 'SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW":
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
but no joy. (Upgraded video drivers, checked the
swap file registery settings, yada, yada.)

This is his symptom. When he presses "Start",
"Turn Off Computer", it takes about 5 minutes for the
"Turn off Computer" dialog box to pop up. Drives
him nuts. (The computer will shutdown normally
after pressing "Turn Off".)

Now here is the pain in the neck. It takes about
two hours for this to occure. When it FINALLY shuts
down for me and then restarts, the symptom can not be
reproduced.

AND, here is what I hope is a CLUE. One time when
I went to troubleshoot it, I power up the machine
and walked away (distracted by other problems).
I left it sitting at the user logon/password prompt
for about two hours. And, when I finally got back to it,
I tried to shutdown the computer with the shutdown
button on the logon screen, it took the same 5 minutes
as if I were already logged in for two hours.

When the user has left it for me to troubleshoot,
I tried turning off every process in the task manager
that I could kill, and still no joy.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Many thanks,
-T

Before you 'shutdown' the PC start Task Manager and the with Task Manager
displaying the processes, shutdown the PC and see if there is a process that
all of a sudden goes to the top of the CPU% list and stays there.

You may also want to try 'Autoruns' from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.
It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Almost forgot, you can try opening a Command Prompt window and shutting down
the PC.
Note: You will need a space between the -t and 01 (values from 00 to 99
seconds are allowed)

Shutdown command:
shutdown -s -t 15

For a list of the commands available open a command window and at the prompt
just enter shutdown (without any switches)

Is clear pagefile at shutdown enabled? (if so this will extend shutdown
times).
This is worth a look at.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314834

Navagate to the registry key in the article,if the value is 1 like the
article change it to 0,save and exit. This will disable "clear pagefile at
shutdown.
Good luck
