Shutdown/logoff takes 10 mins. plus

Using Windows XP Pro, as is a friend of mine, we both started experiencing
very slow shutdowns, logoffs and re-starts. My friends system started
acting sluggish with the recent installation of MS Updates downloads. Mine
was acting dead slow before the updates. We did a non-destructive OS
re-install on my box but is still remained slow, but somewhat improved. Now
that I have all the Updates installed it takes over 10 minutes to turn the
system off with an orderly shutdown. What's happening here? Thanks for any
help.

Not due to MS updates. I have 'em all and my Dell-y shuts down in a dilly.

More likely: One (or more) of your applications is not allowing Windows
to shut down. Not hard to diagnose, but let's get a few things out of
the way first.

You do close all open applications before shutting down, right?

You are 100% free of any form of malware, correct?

Automatic Updates are not set to install at shutdown, yes?

Troubleshooting:

Open Task Manager to the Applications tab before shutting down -
anything listed there? (Should not be.)

Gazing at the icons in your system tray, close each one manually. Is
shutdown faster now?

If still no joy: Open Task Manager to the Processes tab (after closing
all programs in the system tray) and kill all processes except
explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe. Is shutdown faster now?

This should help you identify which application(s) prevent Windows from
shutting down normally. Then it's a matter of contacting the offending
app's technical support. Or you can try the User Profile Hive Cleanup

Dear JS,

You're right, my friend and I both upgraded to ZASS 8.0.20 at the same time.
I checked ZA forums and they are aware of the problem(s). I'm going to do a
full uninstall and try it again. If not ZA is working on a fix. They also
advise to go back to Version 7.0 until the problem is corrected. Thanks
again. Charles

Thank you for the feedback.

Note: If you have Windows XP SP3 or SP2 installed then going back to an
earlier version of Zone Alarm this should not be a problem.

However if you are still at SP2, then DO NOT install SP3 until after ZA has
provided a fix, as earlier versions of ZA are know to cause problems when
installing SP3.
