Slow Shutdown Problems

I am trying to help a friend with a new computer (custom built) with XP PRO
512 Megs of RAM, 3.0 Intel, 100 G HD.

If it has been in use for approximately half an hour, it takes over five
minutes between the START - Shutdown click and when the window with the
Icons for Shutdown and Restart shows. Then it will take up to 10 minutes
before it actually shuts down. If however you initiate a shutdown sequence
within 15 minutes of startup, it snaps right to and shuts down in about 30
seconds.

We have run almost every antispyware program on it and it comes up clean.
We had Norton Antivirus on it and it reported clean, but Norton was very
slow to load. We uninstalled Norton and installed AVG. AVG reports a clean
system.

Unfortunately, we have tried the diagnostic shutdown of various background
programs and services. But if you try a change, the machine works great
until it has been on for 30 minutes or more and then it is again very slow
to complete the shutdown sequence. You know you are in trouble when the
little window with shutdown - restart - etc. icons does not show.

I have tried to identify any problem application with the task manager, but
it will not come up once the poor shutdown has been initiated. At that
point the "reset" button is the only choice or to wait for 15 to 20 minutes
for the computer to shutdown. Even program changes that ask for a restart
get caught in this hang condition if the computer has been on for 30 minutes
or more.

Other than you cannot quit, the computer works fine. No freezes or hangs.

Thank you for the link, but we have tried almost all of the suggestions on
that link.
We don't get any kind of error message, and it does not totally stop at any
point.
As I said, it shuts down just fine until he has been working with it for
awhile.
This is especially frustrating, because any fix we try, we have to wait at
least 30 minutes to see if it worked.

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with
Saving your settings for most of the time while logging off).

Also...
If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe wiil run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Clear Page File At Shutdown

Also...
If ClearPageFileAtShutdown is set to 1, shutdown takes a *long* time.

Check this registry key...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: Set to 0
