shutdown problem -- usual fixes don't work

Hi All,

I have a perplexing shutdown problem on a customer's
XP-Pro-SP2 machine. I have already tried the usual fixes
at 'SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW":
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
but no joy. (Upgraded video drivers, checked the
swap file registery settings, yada, yada.)

This is his symptom. When he presses "Start",
"Turn Off Computer", it takes about 5 minutes for the
"Turn off Computer" dialog box to pop up. Drives
him nuts. (The computer will shutdown normally
after pressing "Turn Off".)

Now here is the pain in the neck. It takes about
two hours for this to occure. When it FINALLY shuts
down for me and then restarts, the symptom can not be
reproduced.

AND, here is what I hope is a CLUE. One time when
I went to troubleshoot it, I power up the machine
and walked away (distracted by other problems).
I left it sitting at the user logon/password prompt
for about two hours. And, when I finally got back to it,
I tried to shutdown the computer with the shutdown
button on the logon screen, it took the same 5 minutes
as if I were already logged in for two hours.

When the user has left it for me to troubleshoot,
I tried turning off every process in the task manager
that I could kill, and still no joy.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Many thanks,
-T

i'm listening - a smaller aspect of this (time-wise) is my daily obstacle --
same Windows...
