ok this is so so weird and complex. in this process, Start, Shutdown, flick
my monitor off and walk away. come back 5 minutes later, my computer is still
on saying Saving your settings, BUT the SECOND i switch my monitor on, it
changes quickly Windows is shutting down and IT SHUTS DOWN!.. if i click
shutdown and wait and watch it, it will take a good few minutes aswell. im
stuck. i know my way around computers quite well but this has got me. i doubt
its anything to do with the page file and i definately have no unwanted
processes in the background running. please help.

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with
Saving your settings for most of the time while logging off).

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe wiil run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Hey Wes, wow thank you so much for the fast reply. i wasnt expecting a reply
back that quick. i havnt tried your method as of yet but i will. in the
meantime i analyzed my processes with a fresh windows copy and they are
pretty much identical. all are running in their correct modes. i was just
curious as to how this happened as it never used to occur. i mean, its got to
be something that is holding the registry while trying to shut down? i only
have 1 thig starting up and that is for my webcam, and through processes
other than microsoft is my ipod service. i will give your method a shot.
thanks once again for your speedy reply.

Regards Stan
ps. regarding eventvwr, i am getting those Userenv errors.

thanks

You can download the trialware version of x-setup... run the CLASSIC mode
there among the categories there is Startup/shutdown option.

You must go to

Shutdown>windows>program shutdown>autoend programs = checkmark

Press Apply

program timeout= decrease time to 2 and 2

Press Apply

Service timeout = decrease to 2

Press Apply

Restart the pc for the settings to take effect. On the next shutdown the
speed should have increased!

I have also uploaded for you an older version of x-setup that was freeware
( X-setup 6.6 last freeware version ) download from here:(last program on
page)
http://www.computerboom.net/download/utilities.html

Please tell me if this solves your problem. :)

Stan,

There is a bunch of screwing around that you can do, but if you're getting
the Userenv errors, UPHClean will speed up shutdown. UPHClean takes action
to allow profiles to unload. It assists in unloading the users registry
hive. Bottom line, it works.

Before UPHClean came along MS advised for Userenv/1517 errors:
[[You do not have to do anything. You can ignore the warning.]]
From...
Warning error 1517 in Event Viewer after first restart
