Compaq PC with XP-Home Edition, it starts up to login screen, as soon as you
pick a user it freezes up. I've tried various restore points from safe
mode, and they don't solve this.

I've also tried turning off "Use the Welcome screen" and "Fast User
Switching" to no effect, it then freezes as soon as you try to logon. Virus
definition are up to date, and it only has SP1 installed on it. Trying to
figure it out without resorting to "Install Disks" provided by Compaq.

Thanks for any ideas, no matter how off the wall...well, maybe not soaking
HD in tapioca pudding, that's pretty off the wall (my brother's suggestion,
he really, really likes tapioca pudding).

boot the system in safe mode - run 'msconfig' from Run and then disable all
apps in the 'Startup' panel... While you are in safe mode run a virus check,
and spybot.

Thanks, James, I'll give that a try...I can't believe I haven't done that
already, sometimes the things you forget are the simplest ones.
