Computer running slow

Thanks to the people that got my gateway fixed. I have no idea even how i
got to that screen that fixed it.

This topic might be like whats listed on page #2 "slow computer".

- My computer is roughly 5 years old. I've had to reformat it a few times in
the last month. It acts normal for a few hours, then sorta freezes up. Its
slow to start up-slow to download websites-slow to shut down. Last time i ran
it,it froze up and i pushed the "power" button and rebooted: Acted normal
again.
I've run dban and used the factory restore disc (with all their extra
worthless software) everytime i format.

compaq presario -amd 2.0ghz
256 ram
40g hard drive
win xp home
norton fire wall - antivirus is install

I'm running firefox and zonealarm fire wall.
Am i needing to make an adjustment to my msconfig or is it something else?

Drop anything Norton and any third party firewalls. Use something like
Avira Antivirus and the built-in Windows XP firewall. Use MalwareBytes to
do a full system scan now and periodically in the future after updating it.

You're running both the Norton and the Zone Alarm firewall? Turn one off.

The hard drive, or some other hardware is your problem.. maybe the power
supply. It MIGHT be heat-related. No one needs to reformat a few times
in a month.

I'm not running norton firewall or norton anti virus. It's preloaded on the
computer and it keeps asking me if i want to complete the install. Or
something like that. I've tried going into "add/remove software" and it keeps
asking me to complete the install. I've also gone into msconfig and removed
the boxes in the services section and it still asks me to complete the
install.
Are you saying windows xp has its own" built in" firewall?
This computer comes preloaded with alot of useless junk (aol/office
2005/quicken/ and what not)

I think the problem has something to do with the msconfig

Hi, you can speed up your computer by the following ways:
1. scan your PC fully by a professional antivirus software like AVG,McCafe. Because virus always cause a computer slow down.Do not use two antivirus at one time for they will make conflict and then you computer may collapse.

2.Registry is the centre database of your computer operating system which contains information and settings for hardware, operating system software, most non-operating system software, and per-user settings. You must load the registry whenever you launch any programs on your computer. If the registry is too fat or with some errors, computer's performance will seriously be impacted. So, you need to clean up registry and fix its errors.

If you are not familiar with registry, don't remove files away from it and clean up it easily for you may delete important things that will make your computer in trouble. You'd better choose to use a professional registry cleaner.
3.There must be too many programs start up automatically when you start your computer.Run a registry optimizer or cleaner to stop those unnecessary start-up programs.
4.Have you ever clean up your computer since you bought it? If the answer is never, I am sure that there are lots of junk files on it. Junk files is also one of reasons that will cause computer slowing down. You'd better delete them regularly.

2,3,4 can be realized by a registry optimizer softare.

5.If a registry optimizer doesn't work, add RAM or do a fresh reinstall of windows. 256RAM is too little to run a computer smoothly. Before you do a reinstall, please remember to back up.However, you should know that frequent reinstall is harm to hard disk.

6.If you have more than 1 driver, put programs on other drivers ,not C driver, because commonly C is for operating system. And defrag hard disks every 2 months.

7. do not run too many programs at one time
