usb to ethernet converter

Hi:

I have a USB1.1 to 10/100m ethernet converter. I wonder how it can reach
100MBPS. The USB1.1 supports 12MBPS only. So this converter can never
achieve more than 12mbps speed. Am I right?

Hi,

yes, you're rite, that just means, it supports the 100Mbps protocol, it's
diffrent from the 10Mbps, that why it's selled as 10/100Mbps interface, that
doesn't mean it can reach netto 100Mbps, but that 'real'-speed doesn't reach
any Network-Interface anyway....

You have that right. See Ron's reply.

It can't handle 100Mb/s and can saturate USB 1.x at 10Mb/s. There for they are
contraindicated for USB v1.x and should only be used with USB v2.0 which is 480MB/s and can
handle both 10 and 100Mb/s Ethernet.

However, I think that a PCI or PCMCIA NIC is still better.

most of the time these are used with a broadband connection which at is best
is rated at 3 mb so it is no big deal
