Such thing as Firewire to USB cable/connector ?

Is there such a thing as a Fireqire to USB cable (or connector/adaptor) ?. I
have bought a USB casing which converts my HD to a USB HD, but it only
connects through my USB1.1 and so it's a bit slow. I cannot get USB2.0
because i don't want to upgrade to XP SP1 or SP2.

I have Firewire and was wondering if i could use that port to connect my USB
HD to. i.e. i need a cable with a Firewire plug on one end and a small
square USB end on the other (it's not the usual rectangle USB plug, it's a
small square USB, similar to what plugs into the back of a printer).

What's the easiest and best way of doing this, if it's possible ?

Easiest (and smartest) way is to upgrade to sp2 and use usb2.0.

Hi,

Why do you need to update to SP2 to use USB 2.0? If your hardware is only
rated to USB 1.1, from what I understand, you can`t just change the software
to make it USB 2.0. On my Notebook, which originally had XP SP1, it has USB
2.0.

I know that now, but at the time I thought USB would be ok, still left with
this problem though.

I rang Maplin Electronics (2 different shops), both said 'no', but i figured
people in these ng are more expert and might know a bit more.

about whether or not upgrade your Windows XP system to SP2 or not, but is
whether your main board supports USB 2.0 or not. In fact, if your main
board supports USB 2.0, you can install the USB 2.0 driver provided by the
main board manufacturer no matter you are running Windows SP1 or SP2.
Please understand motherboard provided by its manufacturer that is
independent of Windows system. About whether or not USB 2.0 is supported by
the motherboard, you need to refer to the manual provided along with your
motherboard or along with your computer. In addition, you can also contact
the vendor of your computer for the instruction.

Regarding whether or not upgrade Windows XP to SP2, Microsoft strongly
recommend upgrading your Windows XP system to SP2, which includes latest
security updates and new features. For more information, you can refer to

Thanks Lee for the good information below. I bit the bullet and got a PCI
USB2.0 board today, installed it and it's great (went from transfer rate
0.81mb/s to 11.36mb/s, testing on a 125mb file). So, as you can see, it's
much faster. I am just being picky now, but the box says it's capable of
48mb/sec, but musn't grumble because 11mb/sec does me fine !
