USB/Firewire card

I have a USB/Firewire card I bought a while ago to increase the number
of slots on my computer. I plugged it into the old board and it never
worked (windows didn't even detect it had been added).

Ultra ULT40109 8-Port USB 2.0/Firewire Combo PCI Card - 4 External USB
2.0, 1 Internal USB 2.0, 2 External Firewire, 1 Internal Firewire Port
MPN: ULT40109

I'm plugging it into my new board and the same thing happens. It
occurs to me it may need to have a cable run from the unit to one of
the motherboard's internal USB jacks (and possibly a firewire jack).
Is this likely? If so, what sort of cable(s) do I buy (the card didn't
come with a cable, I still have the box and double-checked).

That's either a bad card or a bad insertion or a bad slot.

That sounds ominous for the card. We trust the inserter :)

No. The card *provides* internal firewire & usb (in addition to
external), it doesn't /require/ firewire or usb from the mobo.

One person commenting in the ultra review section said that he had
trouble installing the card -- something about the arrangement of the
usb/s caused him to have to make physical modification near the PCI slot
that I don't exactly/ at all/ picture from his description.

Is the card going into the slot nicely?

Another person who said he had to return the card didn't know what he
was talking about.

*LOL* I'm not sure you should ;). But, I appreciate the vote of
confidence.

That's what I thought but then it occured to me that people often have
problems plugging usb devices into add-on cards because of the lack of
power. So, I was thinking _maybe_ there was some sort of cable I
needed to plug in to draw power off the motherboard.

I bought a new motherboard with quite a few USB ports so I think I'll
just toss the card. It's over a year old (just been sitting in the
old case doing nothing but taking up an otherwise unused slot). I was
just looking for things I could plug into each slot on this MB to test
all the slots are good.

I would consider that ultra card not a good choice for that test :-/

I have a couple of old sound cards lying around here somewhere which
would also not be good test subjects :)

Yeah, I figured that out ;). My cheap turtle beach sound card is doing
the job.
