USB problems after system rebuild

Here is my sorry tale:
My hardware: Compaq Presario 2700 laptop, 512MB RAM, XP Professional SP2
built up from original OS of XP Home Edition then added XP Professional
upgrade + incremental SP upgrades up to SP2. Everything worked fine; USB
ports worked fine for a Buffalo 250GB drive, an IO Data 1GB thumb drive and
iPod.

While fixing viruses that my daughter introduced, I had a system crash. The
original XP CD would not boot so I went down the road to the store and bought
a brand new copy of XP Professional including SP2. Rebuilt the machine
without too much trouble BUT the IO Data thumbdrive and iPod no longer work.

In both cases, in Hardware Manager, I can see entries under Disk Drives that
correctly identify the device. Under USB COntrollers, I can see an entry for
"USB Mass Storage Device" All as it should be.

Neither device appears in My Computer

In Control Panel->Computer Management->Disk Management, I can see an entry
for either device but with no drive assignment. I can assign a drive (I chose
"P:" in order to avoid possible conflicts at the top or bottom end of the
alphabet). After assigning the drive, I can see the drive in, for example,
Word but it still does not appear in My Computer. And of course, after
rebooting or just unplugging either drive, I lose the drive assignment that I
just made.

There are a *lot* of similar problems reported on the net but I have not
found anyone with a solution yet.

Desperately seeking Susan. (Someone Up-to-Speed And kNowledgable)

Sounds like the daemon tools problem:

Yep, that fixed it. Thanks. Curious how those files (sptdxxx.y) got on my
computer not having ever installed Daemon Tools (never heard of the tool
before), but what the hell, it fixed it.....
