I am trying to use an unused internal 160G drive with USB adapter as an
external drive. System (XP Home) says it found USB device. But nothing I
recognize in System Devices > hard drives under System in Control Panel. I
tried My Computer right/click Manage > Storage > Local disk drives. I see
no new USB drive listed there to format.

Can anyone help or make any suggestions?

TIA

Some USB to IDE adapters, insist on the drive being jumpered as Master.
So Cable Select as a jumper option might not work.
If not jumpered properly, the USB adapter has nothing to report.

Right-click My Computer> click manage> click Disk Management.
Find the disk there, and format it.

Always turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP.

Now you need to know how to use MS Fix-It
< http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal >

At no time Format partition 2 D: System-Recovery

Found it! Stupid mistake on my part. Not Drive switch - already had
guessed Master.

Previous XP announcing new hardware found was evidently for adapter, not
the drive.

Power cord hidden behind table to in-line IDE/SATA to USB adapter power
supply had become unplugged at the mid-cord P/S. Once reconnected the
drive was announced as found by XP and installed and showed up in My
Computer > Manage > Local drives where it accepted initialization,
partitioning, quick-formatted and is now in use.

Right-Click on "My Computer" --> manage --> disk management

Clutching at straws - is it partitioned (as opposed to formatted)?
