USB problem

hi i have a strange usb issue. i have xp pro with sp2 and all recent
updates. everything was fine then all of a sudden my ipod was not
recognized. i assumed at first it was a problem with my ipod. but on my other
pc it shows up just fine. i tried all the usb ports i have. front, back card
and on motherboard. same issue. but my mouse and keyboard(usb) work fine.
then i tried to hook up my external harddrive and found it was doing the same
thing on any usb port i have. i just get a error message that says :USB
device not recognized, one of the devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned or windows does not recognize it. and in devise manager it
just shows up as unknown device. both work fine on my other computer and as
far as i can find, there are no drivers for my ipod nano or my western
digital external drive. i have been using both these devices on this computer
for at least 6 months. also i have a line6 pod (music device for guitar)
which hooks up to my computer via and midi-to-usb cable. it stopped working
too but after reinstalling the drivers for the cable and java runtime
enviorment it works fine. also my ipod charges when hooked up to any of the
usb ports. it seems to me its a software issue and not a bad cable or
hardware.
if anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreaciate it

standard thing to try is to remove the usb devices from device manager.
shut the computer down , wait 3-5 minutes, power up.
allow it to find and install the usb hubs again and then try it again.

You might want to check the voltage coming off of the USB port. If you
are plugging in a device that needs the full 5vdc at 500mA and your
port is not producing it that can get you a hard disk that is found but
not accessible. I have a WD Passport, which is powered off the port and
have had this problem with plugging into unpowered hubs that had other
devices plugged into into it.

Both external hard drives and iPods are "Heavy Demand" USB
peripherals. Windows is supposed to report over current states
but most times what will happen is the device will not work and
may disable other devices sharing the same Root Hub/Controller.
One class of devices that does this are portable media players &
a good number of PDAs.

Best to plug up one at a time and check the Controllers Bandwidth
usage and the power draw on the Root Hub.

i have the IDENTICAL problem as GPS -
started yesterday -
my mouse and printer still work with 2 of my usb ports
but if i try to attach any external storage devices to the front or rear usb
ports - hard drives, jump drives - all i get is "unknown device" in device
manager - jumpdrive lights up, then goes dark, then device not recognized -
(get that annoying pop-up) - so there is no power draw that i could see -

i checked all the devices in device manager - all Sis 7001's, roots, etc are
working and enabled - and the unknown devices have no drivers installed (all
of a sudden . . . )

my daughter just got a nano and plugged it in yesterday - i wasn't sure
whether it was that or a bad jumpdrive, or just re-plugging the jumpdrive to
quickly - - but the nano seems to be the common thread -

it's like a switch was flipped and something needs to be re-activated - or?

tried a hotfix that MS sent me KB920875 - made matters worse - had to
restore to previous checkpoint - (which was also previous to the problem
occuring but that didn't fix it -

MS was not very helpful - they sent me here to figure this out with you -

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - this is very frustrating and
time consuming . . .

(and someone ought to warn all theose nano owners . . . . )

i just read somewhere else to try this:
Remove and reinstall all USB controllers
To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node,
and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
7. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that
the issue is resolved.

but i'm loathe to hit uninstall unless i'm prepared for the worst (which
usually happens) --
does this require any software available on cd? -
or should it all be on my harddrive and automatic when i restart?
(my pc did not come with a set of disks . . . )
(i think i'll need a shot of bourbon before i try this . . . )
if i screw something up, will a restore to a previous checkpoint fix it? (it
didn't fix the current problem, so i doubt it) -
thanks -

fyi - i tried all of this -
connected up a non-usb mouse - disconnected all usb devices - restarted pc -
uninstalled all usb controllers, root hubs, etc in device manager - ALL -
then shut down again -

when pc restarted it reinstalled all usb drivers, told me all new hardware
was ready to use - -
so i shut down, re-connected the USB mouse and printer - and restarted
result: the mouse and printer still work -
however - any usb external data storage device still registers as an unknown
device (memory stick, external harddrive)

now what?

i finally fixed the usb problem - and it was so simple, it's ridiculous -
i had to shut off the computer and UNPLUG it for about 30 minutes -
then all i did was turn it back on -
ridiculous . . .
