USB 2.0 HDD EXTERNAL BOX

Hello,
Can anyone please help me. I have an external USB 2.0 HDD External Box. When I connect the external box to my pc via the USB Cable, nothing happens. (the USB cable has two ends [1 usb and 1 mini sub] and I am not really sure why?). The control light does not turn on; My pc does not recognize the
device. My OS is Windows 7 .

Are you sure the cable is not damaged?
Have you tried the device on another PC/Laptop?
Has the Ext case got a HDD inside of it?
Are the USB ports you are plugging it into damaged?
Have you tried different USB ports?
Are the ports you are trying compatible?
Do other devices that are plugged into the ports working?
