usb mass storage inactive

I cannot get my PC to recognise mass storage devices, like 'card reader' and
'digital camera'.
This has happened only since reinstalling XP Home and bringing all the
updates uptodate.
I have reinstalled drivers and searched for answers in other threads without
success.
My device manager is shownig error under mass storage devices.
Anyhelpers out there please?

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Hub device(s),
Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers
again automatically.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I uninstalled each USB Root Hub in turn and restarted but the problem did
not go away.
Each time I plugged in the card reader my PC looked for a driver and
couldn't find one and I got this notice...
"There was a problem installing this hardware. An error occurred during the
installation of the device. The data is invalid"...
Incidentally , I also tried my Fuji Finepix1400Z digital camera and got the
same problem, which now means I cannot get to the pics in it!
I also tried plugging the card reader and the camera into each of the 6 USB
ports I have but still got the same problem.
Thanks for your input.

thank you elmo.I noticed on the Microsoft update news that there is a known
problem with mass storage and XP2. They advised to wait for a Hotfix in
August .
Does anyone know if it is already available? please.

Hi EJ:
I had an enormous and very lengthy problem getting XP to install
enhanced USB drivers for my Seagate external HDD a few months ago.
If you go to Control Panel\System and click on Hardware then Drivers you
will see, near the bottom, your USB drivers listed. One at least should say
"Enhanced".
Double-click on it, and click the Driver tab, then go down and to the left
and click Driver Details.
This should show the following items, all from from System32 :

USBEHCI.SYS
USBHUB.SYS
USBPORT.SYS
HCCOIN.DLL
USBUI.DLL

I think I ended up copying the three .sys files fromC:\Windows\System32 to a
floppy and directing the PC to upload the drivers from A:.
It took quite a while and many, many attempts!
This XP O/S is really obstinate, and as thick as two planks despite having
this so-called Wizard!
A hotfix for this issue is long overdue!
Good luck,

Jim.

Thanks Jim
I am in the process of trying some other possible solutions at the moment,
including one which advises that you must have usbstor.sys on your files.
I haven't so I am trying to get it from the internet.
MS don't seem to give it away!
I have noted your possible solution and will get to it soon.
thanks again

I really appreciate your help Jim.
I have now tried all the suggestions, including downloading the five files
you suggested together with the usbstor.sys one.
Unfortunaely, I am still without mass storage capability!
It's going to take a miracle cure for my problem!
cheers

Eddie, I recall that when I was having my problem, about a year back, a
subscriber named Anna was most helpful, giving long, detailed explanations
of how these USB problems might be resolved.
I've tried searching for her posts but for some reason don't see them on my
PC. In case it's a local problem here, perhaps you'd like to try a search
of the entire Read and Unread posts with better luck than me..
Beyond that, I've run of of suggestions for you, unless you can track down
that 'August Hotfix' you mentioned earlier.

Jim.

Thanks Jim
I will spend time looking for that thread today.
The "August Hotfix" I mentioned earlier was a notice from Microsoft which
was DATED 29th August so perhaps they are still working on it.
Later today we are off on a short break until the 3rd October so the problem
will be in limbo until then.
cheers
Eddie
