After stopping all programs that use my external mass storage device
(drive:E) and trying to "safely remove hardware" I get a message saying: The
device "generic volume" cannot be stopped right now.
Despite waiting some time this message does not change.
Any suggestions?

try closing out of all programs using ther external hard drive. than clk it
to open it and clk stop. Than clk ok. u should get a message down at the
clock saying save to remove hard drive. If that fails restart computer and
than repeat the commands. that should doit.

Im not sure by what you mean that the recycle bin needs to be turned off?
After using the recycle bin in turns oof itself and returns to the dormant
mode. I did clean out the bin but still could not get the "safe to switch
off" harddrive message.

Im not sure what you mean clk to open / close the hard drive after closing
programmes using the hard drive. The way I tried to do this was either via
Clk My Computer or Clk Explore. Neither of these options worked.
