USB mass storage device drive allocation-laptop

In a previous USB storage device drive allocation discussion, the
following pathway was given as the solution:

'My Computer, Manage, Disk Management - assign a drive letter'.

On my laptop, in Windows XP SP2, I cannot find this pathway. I open up
disk Management/portable devices and my portable storage shows as
'unallocated'. I have checked under every menu heading, RH mouse,
properties, etc, but cannot find a path to 'assign a drive letter'. Can
anyone enlighten me please?

Cyril,

It sounds like you have a new unformatted usb drive. You must first format
this drive in order to assign a drive letter to it. Just right click on the
unallocated drive and click format from the drop down box. But beware, This
is only if this is a drive that you have not saved anything to. You will
lose all data on the drive but if it is saying unallocated then most likely
it has nothing on it. Good Luck

Before you can assign a drive letter to it you must create at least one
partition on it and format it.
