Upgrading from 98 to XP problems

Ok, I eliminated all programs that the setup listed as not
working with XP. I just tried to install it (full, no
file saving) and after it completed copying install files,
I recieved an error message like this:
C:\$Win_NT$.~LS\i386\asms\1000
\MSFT\Windows\GDIPlus\GDIPlus.cat is corrupt, it contains
all zeroes. What does this mean? The setup wiz then
proceded to restore all files, then shut down.
Also, I tracked this file down. It is not on my computer,
but on the upgrade disk itself. Could this mean that I
have a bad disk?

Any help is appreciated.

Usually this associated with a badly burned copy of the XP CD.

That's what happens when you don't purchase a legal copy...And admitting it
on a MS forum too..very stupid...

Well, if it is a badly burned copy, I guess I can go march
back to Comp USA and find out WTF is going on, since I
pulled the disk out of the package myself. I also tried
the install again, and got farther this time. It
restarted my comp, and started booting up. But it hung up
at the blue screen, saying at the bottom that it is
loading windows.

If it is a burned disk, the fault lies with Microsoft, and
not some illegal burning.

If you have the Win98SE CD, then format and start over doing a clean
install. You can do it from the WinXP upgrade disk.
During the install it will ask for an appropriate upgrade path and the
98SE disk would be one.
