Failures Installing Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade

I have followed all of the pre-installation instructions
(file cleanup, scandisk, scanreg, turning off virus
control, power management, etc.) to the best of my ability,
and used dynamic update as well, but the installation has
failed repeatedly.

I am running Windows 98 on a 300 MHz Pentium 2 that has all
the hardware and memory requirements. I get some
identification of components that will not work unless I
get a new driver, and I'm prepared for that. But I get a
fatal error message somewhere about an hour into the
installation. Here is a copy of my setuperr.log (note that
it will pass the Exchange/Outlook error but not the syntax
error in the mainfest/policy file):

Error:
The upgrade pack Microsoft Exchange, Outlook failed in
Initialize9x with error code 11. Setup cannot process this
pack.
***

Error:
The Microsoft Exchange, Outlook upgrade pack from Microsoft
Corporation failed. Setup cannot process this upgrade pack.

When calling technical support, please have the version of
Exchange or Outlook and the version and language of Windows
Messaging Subsystem. To determine the version of these
components, find the appropriate file using the Windows
Explorer, select the file, choose Properties from the File
menu, and click on the Version tab of the Properties
dialog. The appropriate file for Exchange is EXCHNG32.EXE,
OUTLOOK.EXE for Outlook and MAPI32.DLL for the Windows
Messaging Subsystem.

Jim, go into the Bios and choose Optimal Settings. Also, remove all
peripheral devices not needed for the Install.

I had this problem - I tried the upgrade option and the new install - both crashed repeatedly, eventually XP refused to boot at all.

The problem was only resolved with a Clean Boot - wiping out Win98 and new install of XP.
