Hi

Is it possible to upgrade a Windows XP Home edition to XP prof. ?

Thanks, Lars

it is, but unless you need to join a domain there is not really any valid
reason for doing so.....

Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There's no special version for
this, but you can use either the Upgrade or Full version (but *not* an OEM
version, which only can do a clean installation). Since th eUPgrade version
is least exepnsive, that's what you should get.

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home and
Professional are identical except that Professional includes a few features
(mostly related to security and networking) missing from Home? Most home
users don't need and would never use these extra features and will see no
benefits by upgrading.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp>

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note another point, not included in any of the above: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

Yes. You can do this with the Retail Upgrade, Retail Full Install, or
Volume License version of Windows XP Pro.

However unless you have a current or anticipated future need for one
of the specific functions or features that are contained in XP Pro but
are not included with XP Home there is no benefit to be achieved by
doing so. The two versions are compiled from the same source code
base and other than the specific items referred to above the two
versions are identical. In particular there is zero difference in
performance or stability between the two versions unless your computer
has a motherboard that has two physical CPU chips installed.

See the following web sites for inforamtion about the specific
differences between the two versions:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
One additional difference, which is not specifically mentioned on the
above sites, is that in a peer-to-peer network configuration XP Home
only allows 5 concurrent logins to a shared network resource whereas
XP Pro allows 10.

Good luck

Hi all

Thanks for all your replys. I'll need to join this pc to a newly created
domain, so the upgrade is needed.
Thanks again.

Certainly.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
