Unstable Wireless Connection

S

Serhan Ogan

Hi, my wireless modem is 20 feet away, there are no obstacles or
digital interference (that I know of) in the way. My laptop (Toshiba
A-10 Satellite) is running almost 24/7.

Everyday at least once, my connection drops.

Annoying...., anyway,

XP locates my modem and network,(Signal strenght: Excellent, means
nothing when you can not ride that signal) and lists it among other
wireless networks it picks. It tries to connect automaticaly and
sometime does. Usually I have to click CONNECT and after 6-7 trials
get it to work again. Laptop connects to the best network immediately,
anywhere else. (Meant to be mobile or what?) The computer does indeed
connect to a very weak unsecured network, deep down in the "priority
list".
I did check the list and even delete that far away network just to see
it coming back minutes later.

This problem sometimes last 2-3 hours. It does say Acquiring network
address

When the connection drops I do;
Hit repair.
Restart,
Turn the wireless adapter on-off.
Unplug the wireless modem for 5 minutes etc.

Wireless Modem:
US Robotics 54Mbps ADSL Router

PC :
Toshiba A 10
XP SP2
Centrino

= First, try to look into the Wireless Adapter Power option to decide if the
computer, especially Laptops configured to Turn the Wireless Device OFF for
Power saving.
To do that, open the Device Manager, scroll to Network Adapters expand [+]
to [-] to see the sub-root/tree of listed devices and right click the
wireless Card/NIC and select properties.
On properties click on On Power Option/Management Tab, uncheck/Untick the
check box for :
[ ] Let the computer turn this devices OFF for power saving (feature).

= Secondly, your Network Wireless channel, is it set to the default (11) or
to something else other than this, which may be used by your neighbour and
interfering with your Connection.

Also, does the feature for On Demand enabled on your Modem/Router web page
configuration.

Open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Go through these cleaning steps to see or get a clear opinion on how
clean your machine is:
= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Most Wireless setups default to Radio Channel #6. You might want
to login to the Router and switch to an alternate channel. Usually this
is effective when you have multiple Wireless networks (SSIDs) found
in your area.

Thanks for all the help guys. Be sure that every suggestion has been
taken into consideration. The Pc is well maintained and clean, but
switching the channels may help. We'll see. Give me a 48.

Try asking your question at alt.internet.wireless . These people are pretty
good at wireless issues.

Hello again. Changing channels did not work either. Could not connect
for an hour. I also realized that when I take the laptop and go next
to the modem it does connect. Wonder if the modem is all right. Is it
possible to run diognostics on a wireless modem?
Thanks.
