Unread messages onWelcome page but not in mailbox

On the Welcome screen, under my account name , it says 4 unread messages but
when I open my mailbox they are not there. I am able to send and receive mail
perfectly but I can empty my mail box and the unread mail message is still on
my Welcome screen. Help? Thanks!
