Unread message count

Why do new messages I am writing show as unread? Even if I delete these
messages they still show as unread unless I open the message again.

I actually read the message as I type it so the message is not unread. I
would like my unread count only to contain messages received from other users
(or even messages I send to myself on a distribution list), not messages that
I am writing.
