unread mail

When receiving new email, my inbox may indicate that I have 10 unread
messages but only 5 show up in inbox. The rest may be found in unread mail
and can be read there, but if I drag one to another folder or print one all
of them disappear until a day or two later when all of a sudden they appear
in my inbox. It doesn't appear to be related to filters since the same
sender will have one message appear in inbox and another message only in
unread mail. Help!

The Unread Mail folder is not a real folder, but a search context. If you
see a message in the Unread Mail folder, the display will also indicate the
real folder containing the message. If they're not all in your Inbox, then
you must have a rule moving some of them to another folder.

The search folder, unread mail, indicates that inbox is the real folder
containing the message, but it is not there. It will show up in inbox a day
or two later. Any further ideas?

Sounds like you either have a filter on the view you're using, you're not
using the view you think you are, or you're not sorting on the Received
column.

The view for inbox is arrange by date, show in groups. There are no filters
applied. The sort is on received date descending. The messages that do not
show up in inbox on the date they are received (appearing only in the search
folder unread mail) do show up a day or two later in inbox, sorted exactly
where they should be. I'm baffled.

Thanks for the help. Sunshine.

What type of account?

I'm not sure what you are asking for by type of account. We are home users.
The email account is with the service provider Telus. My husband's email
with our service provider is experiencing no problems, though he uses Outlook
Express.

Then it would be a POP/SMTP account, most likely.

I'm at a loss to think of something that may be causing what you see, I'm
afraid. Perhaps someone else will be able to suggest the solution.

Yes, it is a POP/SMTP account.
Yesterday I uninstalled the spyware software we have been using. It was
causing problems booting the computer. Perhaps it was also involved in my
email problems. We'll see if the problem goes away. I'll let you know if
that is the case, meanwhile, thank you very much, Brian, for all of your time
and attention (not only for me, but also, I see, for many others in this
discussion group).
