How can I uninstall the latest Microsoft security update, the one that
makes you enter a password when you start the computer, and changes the
dialog boxes that it shows you when you want to turn off the computer
and gives you a f< s,kding security message when you press
alt+ctrl+sup.

That's not a Microsoft security update to the best of my knowledge? Those
are functions that CAN be changed but not by any recent updates?

Start here:

Automatic Login :

Then return describing the last problem a bit better and we might be able to
help.

Ok, how do I disable this function from Windows XP?

I want to return to the normal state of affairs, in which upon pressing
"close" in the start bar the computer puts up a small window in the
middle of the screen with 3 different buttons, each a different color,
and asks you if you want to shut down or restart, while the screen in
the background slowly turns grayish (kinda cool). There are other weird
things that have happened since this changed (Ctrl+Alt+Delete brings up
a new menu before showing you the old "Processes" window, for example),
but I suppose that whatever switch turned this thing ON, it will turn
all of them together back off when I disable it.

Is it possible that a security update turned this option ON? In which
case the solution is to just turn it back off?

Hmm... I'm still not sure where the close is but I'm going to guess it's
shut down? Anyhow - Start > Settings > Control Panel > Switch to Classic
View > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and log off > tick the
two boxes for fast user switching and the welcome screen so that they're
enabled.
