Uncertain Outlook Data File Version

One of our former employees left - abruptly - and we found he trashed his
hard drive. We were able to recover much of it, including his .pst file, but
we don't know which version of outlook he had on his machine. We have no
record of what his machine came with and believe he may have upgraded it on
his own anyway. Is there a way to tell from the file what version it belongs
to?

Only by trying to open it with the File | Open | Outlook Data File command in Outlook. Have you done that? Why do you think the version is significant?

When we try to open under Outlook 2002 it we get a message saying it is
"incompatible with this version of the Personal Folders information service".
We aren't sure what version to try next, and thought it also might be
different if he used Outlook Express.

That suggests that the file was created in Outlook 2003 using the new Unicode format and making it incompatible with earlier versions.

Outlook Express is a totally different program and irrelevant to your issue.
