Unable to open https sites

Windows XP Home - when for example booking a ferry crossing, when the payment
stage appears (https) I get the 'Web page unavailable' error message. All
other pages display OK. If it's of any use, all was apparently OK until
Norton Internet Security was removed from the PC, and apart from the
quarantine folder, there doesn't seem to be anything left of it. I have not
yet tried totally removing any Symantec/Norton traces from the registry in
case there's a simple fix which I don't know of. I've cleaned up the temp and
temp int files, reset IE6 to defaults in internet option, including security
settings, and run the IP reset routine. I've also run scans for viruses,
trojans etc and spyware. What next anyone?

And what firewall are you using in place of NIS?, maybe that is responsible
for blocking port 443.

Windows XP seems to have a problem with corrupting User Accounts.
After spending some considerable time configuring XP I found that some
secure sites, https://, would not display the page and the page had to be
refreshed in order to display properly.
As a first step and before attempting the tedious & labourious fixes found
on Microsoft's sites, first try what follows.
For a permanent fix, proceed as follows,
Go to Start,Control Panel,User Accounts and create a new account (Computer
Adminstrator). Note that if your original user name was in the form of
J.Frost in the original install, then create the new user account as John
Frost or similar.
Delete the original account, retaining the Files. This is important, else
you will lose all the special configuration that maybe took hours or days to
achieve.
Reboot.
Note that you can revert back to your original User Name at any time, by
reversing the above.
