Unable to burn/format dvd

Have successfully burned to CD in the past using Nero. It won't work with a
dvd I bought the other day (first time I've tried this) - Nero doesn't
recognise that there is a dvd in the drive (it thinks its a read only cd).
I've checked that Nero supports my driver (I have a DVD-R/RW drive in my
Toshiba laptop), have checked for firmware updates and driver updates. In
device manager the driver appears to be working but it doesn't recognise that
there is any media in the drive. I thought I might need to format the dvd in
XP but there is no 'format' option when I click on D drive and file menu (as
suggested in the help section). If I click on the D drive in Explorer
nothing happens (doesn't whirl around like it does with a cd). After 2 days
trying to solve this I'm going mad so any ideas would be gratefully received!

Since XP doesn't directly support burning DVD's this site doesn't cover it.

True, this is an XP section. You need NERO support. Since I use the latest
6.6 Nero, I would first make sure you have a recent version of Nero that
supports your DVD burner. I think they have a list on their site. Or I would
email them. Also, if Nero didn't come with your laptop, there should be
burning software that came with the laptop if it came with a DVD-R/W drive.
And not to insult your inteligence or anything, are you sure it's not a
DVD-ROM/CD-R/W drive instead?

Either way, you really need to ask on a Nero section or Nero tech support
email. Good luck.

Thanks but I've tried all that - Have the most recent version of Nero, yes it
supports my driver, yes i have a DVD-R/RW drive, yes I've got the lastest
driver.... I contacted Toshiba who said I have to use specific DVDs that they
recommend - ie the Verbatim ones i bought apparently are not supported!
Haven't tried a different DVD yet but its my only hope!
