DVD rewriter that thinks its a CD drive

I have this very strange thing happening to my DVD rewriter.

It works perfectly well playing purchased DVDs and burns DVD -R but when I
try to use DVD+R or DVD RW the icon in My Computer changes from DVD RW Drive
E: to CD Drive E: It also thinks that the drive is empty of a disk. If I
try to click on the CD Drive icon it comes up as "Drive not accessible.
Incorrect Function"!

The burner is supposed to handle all types of DVD but Windows cannot
recognise these formats. I know that it is a problem with windows because
Nero recognises the disks perfectly well. Trouble is, I need to burn disks
from outside of Nero and because Windows is not recognising them, other
programmes don't either like VideoStudio.

I have checked that I have the latest DVD driver and my Slave / Master is
correctly configured.

Any good ideas what's going on.

It was fine to begin with but I'm not sure what would have changed.

Thanks Mark

Windows is NOT a DVD writing platform. It only support UDF (universal data
format) for rewritable CD media and that is why it is switching to thinking
you have a CD-R drive. Windows only comes with a UDF reader/writer
installable file system. UDF may not be the format in which you want to
burn your DVDs. If you want the other non-UDF formats, go buy some
software. You DVD-+RW drive should have come with some. You give no good
reason why you cannot use Nero.

Just because Windows includes *some* support for a device doesn't mean it
completely supports the device. Windows comes with generic mouse drivers,
too, but if you want that 20-button mouse to work then you have to install
that mouse's driver. Yeah, the burner (device) supports lots of formats.
That has nothing to do with the OS, its [installable] file systems, drivers,
or software through which you must access the device.

So what did you change recently, like software installs, afterwhich behavior
changed? Did you install Nero's InCD which is their UDF driver and could
conflict with Windows' UDF support (and I know their InCD, as well as
DirectCD from Roxio, is flaky and can blue screen the host). Maybe you need
to reinstall Nero.

There is no native support for writing DVDs in XP. You must use a separate
program such as Nero.
