DVD/CD Problems again

I only occasionally burn a DVD but it seems every time I do there is
something new occurring. Prior to coping files from C drive to DVD+R I
checked the DVD using E: drive properties in windows explorer which
indicated a blank DVD+R as full. I then rechecked same disk using Nero "my
usual copy program" and it also said full. Same results with DVD's
previously partially used. Looked but didn't change various things such as
properties, driver, model, etc and noticed that the description for drive
would change apparently randomly from DVD/CD to CD as I changed views or put
DVD in/out.
Tried to burn the files using Nero and it WORKED!
So what is causing all this false info, disk full, no free space, to show
when I query properties?
I am using XP PRO SP- 2 and have a DVD/cd drive as well as a CD drive. Both
act normal in play mode and CD drive is also normal when burning using
Nero,"never tried MS procedure"

Confused

When copying to DVD/CD the end option (depending on burn software) is to
"close" or "leave open". If the DVD/CD is closed after copying is completed
the DVD/CD will under properties indicate no free space (full) - even though
only partial space was used.

If the DVD/CD is left in open status, properties will indicate used and free
space - the disk can be used for further copying.

From time to time the DVD drive manufacturers will post BIOS updates for
your make and model.
The purpose of which is to allow the drive to properly recognize various
brands of media.

I can't say that the above is your problem as I stay with media that works
reliably for me over the years which is Verbatim.

Thanks for your reply but that is not the case here. The DVD'S are new and
regarding my old ones I always leave in open status to add more later..
