dvd/cd burner problem drive want reconize disc, someone help pleas

I have a dell desktop running windows xp. i bought a sony rewriteable drive
unit "DRU-840A". it came with nero escentials software. installed the
software but everytime i try to make a backup dvd or cd after going threw the
process of the nero wizard when i hit the burn cd/dvd button it gives me the
error "drive is not ready or cd/dvd isn't inserted into drive" i don't know
where to start

Tommy, if it's a new drive and has never worked then make sure the
Ribbon cable has the red stripe facing the white molex power connector. It
has to be aligned with pin 1.
I use CDBurnerXP which is free software and works great.

Ihave almost the same problem, dell pc with windows xp. I bought a hp
external dvd writer, it seems to be installed correctly but never will open
up so I can burn a dvd. I do get a error message everytime I turn on
computer(m32kPlay.exe unable to locate component) I have no idea if the error
message even relates to the dvd writer problem. Anyone have any idea? Thanks
