+RW disc always 'finalize'

Hi,

Since quite some time I have a problem with the CD+RW and DVD+RW discs I
burn. Since I think it has nothing to do with my cd/dvd player/burner and
not with the program I use to burn, I thought I best ask this question into
this newsgroup. I googled the internet for an anwser, but haven't found a
solution yet.

The +RW discs I burn always 'finalize'... that is, I can't erase the discs
after I once burned them and can't add anything to them. The rewritable discs
are 'read only' after I once burned them. On other Windows XP computers I
can't erase or add anything to them either.

Does anyone have any idea if it is possible that this is a setting somewhere
in Windows XP?

I use Windows XP Home Edtion SP2 which is up-to-date, DVD-player/burner is a
Samsung SH-S182M (with latest frimware) which I bought especially because of
this problem. I use Nero 6.6.0.18. Also tried Nero 7.

Found the solution eventually. It seems there's an option in Alcohol120%
with which you can ignore all mediatypes, so all mediatypes are seen as
CD-ROM. I don't know if this is a default setting, but I do know I don't
like it and don't see the use of it....

Since you are using Nero, it appears it is a Nero problem. Suggest you
read the Nero user's guide or seek help from their tech support if no one
can help here.

Thanks for your response Ron. There may be a problem with Nero and XP as
well, but I managed to solve my problem by disabling a setting in
Alcohol120% (see my reply to my own question). It seems this setting
influenced the entire operating system and not only when Alcohol120% was
running.

Regards,

Mark
