Running Windows XP SP2 on a Western Digital hard drive. System runs 24/7 to record weather data and a birdhouse camera image to my web site. Got on the machine this morning and got the "you have Windows updates to install" message! Like the dummy that I am, instead of doing a backup first I just clicked on the "Express Install" option and walked away. When I came back a little later I found the machine trying to restart Windows. Windows would start and just a few seconds after it did the whole thing would start over--back to the computer bootup screen. I tried booting Windows into safe mode but the same thing happened. I put in my original Windows XP Pro disc and tried to run the "repair" setup. As soon as it got to a point where it started to ask "What Windows installation do you want to repair?" the computer would reboot. It wouldn't be a big deal--I'd just reinstall Windows and the couple of programs that I need to run the weather and camera programs but I would really like to get the latest weather and camera files before I do it. So, I pulled the drive and took it to another computer and hooked it up via a USB enclosure. Windows sees the drive in "My Computer" but when I try to access files I get the following error message: "Error Performing Inpage Operation" Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to recover any files off the drive? TIA!
