Your Windows XP computer isn't as secure as it used to be

As of April 2014, support and security updates for Windows XP are no
longer available. Don't let your computer go unprotected.

--------------

I was getting a local weather reporrt, when the above message popped up
on my screen. And it came directly from microsoft.com.

Below that, they tried to sell me a new computer.

--------------

Of course, as soon as I read that my computer isn't as secure as it used
to be, I tossed my computer right in the garbage !!! The last thing I
need is a computer needing a psychiatrist because of an Insecurity
Complex :)

I really doubt that. Just because text in the window said it came from
Microsoft doesn't make it so. That's like malware saying it isn't
malware so, gee, it must not be malware. You would have to know from
where is the source of the popup, like looking at the code (probably a
dynamic page so you'd have to analyze the Javascript) of a server-side
script is connecting to the 3rd party content. Or you could use Fiddler
to show to where you connected (clear list, connect to page, turn off
capture, look at where you connected).

If the unspecified weather site wasn't hacked, it's probably some
advertisement content from a 3rd party source. We'd have to see the
popup content to know that it even looked like it came from Microsoft
rather than slyly misleading you.
Below that, they tried to sell me a new computer.

Yeah, so you went to a site that pushes out 3rd party advertising
content. You've seen lots of those before so what's the big deal?

The only one insecure is you.

I think I've seen the advertisement Casey is talking about.

My only regret, is not thinking to take a screenshot at the
time, because I considered seeing such an advert to be
a "FUD Fail".

The advert was maybe 2.5" on edge. I didn't click it
or anything. I'm a fraidy cat.

I plan to give the advert a grand reception (screen capture
and packet trace), the next time I find it.

The link was on Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com).
It was on the page. I was using my laptop at a WIFI, and that stupid
built in mouse is touchy, and sometimes it will open something by just
scrolling over it. That's probably how it opened. But the URL is
actually from Microsoft.com (with more at the end). I'm at home on
dialup and Win98, and that wunderground page dont load properly my older
browsers.

On the page, they show where you can buy computers with Win8 dierectly
from the Microsoft Store, starting at $249 or something like that. I
kind of looked it over while I was waiting for a large download to
complete. They are all laptop computers from different manufacturers.

Personally, you could not give me Windows8 for free..... I'll stick
with XP and Win98. Even though I'd like to get my hands on Win7 just to
see what it does. But Win8 is just plain ugly. That Metro screen
desktop is not something I want on any of my computers. I read
somewhere it takes 5 steps just to turn the computer off. Leave it to
MS to design something that poorly.

Here is the link to that article. I just remembered that I bookmarked
it.

My next OS wont be from Microsoft. (If I ever decide to leave XP and
Win98). I've been currently playing around with ReactOs and several
flavors of Linux.
