I asked the original question, so introducing another question here has
given some confusion as to which question has been answered. I may have
sorted it out, and this is my report:
I actually did put the Windows Explorer icon (shortcut) on the task bar
about three months ago. In looking back, that is about when the "folders"
button stopped appearing on the regular Windows Explorer menu (when I go
through My Documents to find a file. In fact there was a whole second row of
icons to choose from before I put the Windows Explorer icon on the task bar.
These are the two answers that helped me decide what my problem was:
(1) Like most things, there are Properties that can be adjusted. If you
have multiple ways to launch Explorer (Start, Programs..., Desktop
shortcut, Quick Launch) you will need to adjust the properties for
each method.
(2) You might want to consider adding Windows Explorer as a shortcut on
your
Desktop and/or your Quick Launch toolbar (if you have one). Then right-click
on the icon, select Properties, and in the Target text box, change the entry
to...C:\WINDOWS\explorer.scf

My response: It has never occurred to me that moving an icon gives
different properties. I see now, that when I go directly through My
Documents to find my files, the Windows Explorer does not show that second
row of icons to use.
However, when I use the Windows Explorer icon on the task bar, I see today
and yesterday, that it always shows the two-column view when it opens.
Thanks, Anna and Jose. I guess I put the icon on the task bar, then forgot
to use it for three months.
: Where do I go to set the Windows Explorer menu so I don't have to keep
going
: to View > Explorer Bar > Folders... to display the two-column directory?
:
: Normally it has been right on the Explorer menu - I didn't have to go
: looking for it. It's pretty routine to work in that menu, as well as in
the
: Explorer Bar and the Folders View setup. Lately, I can't find how to keep
: the two-column folders view.
